Marjan Fratnik was a Slovenian angler and fly tier born in Most na Soči–at the confluence of the now famous Soča and Idrijca rivers–in 1919. Known for his simple yet effective patterns, he is most well known for the F-Fly, perhaps the most popular Slovenian pattern of all time. In this week’s great video from Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions, he teaches you how to tie Fratnik’s impressionistic pattern. Tim uses it as a caddisfly imitation, but tied in various colors, the F-Fly is a great, low-riding pattern that can represent a wide variety of insects.

Hook: 3X-short dry-fly hook (here a Fulling Mill FM50 25), size 16.
Thread: Black, 8/0 or 70-denier.
Body: Natural Beaver fur.
Wings: Natural dun CDC.
Head: Black tying thread.
Adhesive: Head cement (here, Sally Hansen Hard-As-Nails).
Tools: Whip-finisher, bodkin.
