In this week’s great fly-tying how-to video from Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions, he teaches you how to tie a simple, effective imitation of the early black stonefly nymph (genus Taeniopteryx). The key to this pattern is the way it mimics the wiggly motion of the naturals, as they make their way to the bank to hatch. Because the patterns isn’t weighted, Tim fishes it as a dropper off a heavier nymph, or you could simply add split shot to your leader.
Early Black Stonefly Nymph
Hook: Hopper hook (here, a Dai-Riki #280), size 18.
Thread: Black, 70-denier or 8/0.
Antennae/legs: Black Centipede Legs, mini.
Body: Black or dark-brown Stretch Tubing, micro.
Wingcase: Chocolate-brown or black pheasant-tail fibers.
Thorax: Dark-brown Australian possum dubbing.
Adhesive: Head cement (here, Sally Hansen Hard-as-Nails).
