In the latest how-to tying video from Tightline Productions, Tim Flagler walks you through the steps to create a two-tone caddis-larva imitation that looks buggy as heck. He notes than net-spinning caddisflies (of the family Hydropsychidae) are common in rivers throughout North America, so trout are always on the prowl for these tasty morsels. The real magic of this pattern is how simple it is to tie because of the way Tim combines the two colors of dubbing by spinning them together into a rope that looks like a barber pole. At the end, you get to play beautician–trimming and combing the fly into its final form. When you’re done, you’ll be astonished by how lifelike it looks.
Calico Caddis
Hook: Barbless grub hook (here a Fulling Mill 5115), size 16.
Thread: Rusty brown, 8/0 or 70-denier.
Body: Olive and yellow-olive rabbit-fur dubbing.
Head: Rusty-brown tying thread.
Back: Brown permanent marker.
Adhesive: Head cement (here, Sally Hansen Hard-As-Nails).
Tools: Dubbing whirl, plunger-style hackle pliers, dubbing brush.
Notes: Try tying in combinations of tan and yellow, with a bead and wire weight, or on a jig hook.
