It sometimes seems as if there is no end to variations on the Woolly Bugger, and for good reason: they work. Previously, Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions taught us how to tie the Squirrel and Herl Bugger, and now he’s come up with a different take on that pattern, based on the colors of the venerable Adams dry fly. As usual, Tim’s tying steps are chock-full of tips that make the process simpler, cleaner, and more efficient. The result is a super buggy streamer that offers a lot of color and lifelike motion in the water.
Adams Bugger
Hook: 3X-long streamer hook (here a Lightning Strike SN3), size 8.
Thread: Black, 140-denier or 6/0.
Tail/back: Barred, natural pine-squirrel Zonker strip.
Body: Black/coffee variegated chenille, medium.
Hackles: Brown and grizzly saddle hackles.
Adhesive #1: Fly-tying wax.
Adhesive #2: Head cement (here, Sally Hansen Hard-As-Nails).
