It’s a simple streamer pattern that imitates a variety of baitfish, such as creek chubs and minnows. As usual, Tim offers several great tying tricks, such as using baby-blanket yarn and several adhesives, to make the fly easier to tie and more durable. You can tie this pattern is many colors and configurations, adding lead eyes, a jig hook, a cone, or whatever else strikes your fancy.
Shenk’s Minnow
Hook: 2X-heavy, 3X-long streamer hook (here, a Lightning Strike SN2), sizes 8-12.
Adhesive #1: Superglue.
Weight: Lead-free round wire, .020.
Thread: White, 6/0 or 140-denier.
Adhesive #2: Superglue.
Tail: White marabou feather.
Body: Baby-blanket yarn.
Adhesive #3: Head cement.
Tools: Straight-bladed scissors, curved-blade scissors.
