Video: How to Tie a Simple, Effective Redfish Fly

Here’s another “guide-fly” lesson from Alvin Dedeaux of All Water Guides. (Or, as he calls them, “super easy to tie, down and dirty, quick and easy, fish-catching guide flies.”) As Alvin says, he doesn’t want to create flies that are complicated or take a long time to tie because a client may throw it into the trees on their first cast. So he’s come up with variations on famous patterns that offer the same basic profile and motion in the water but are easier and faster to tie.

This is a pattern he uses for those times when redfish are in deeper water. The heavy-wire hook and the cone will sink quickly, but without making too much of a plop! when it lands. The deer hair and flash material are attractive in the water. I particularly like the way he finishes the body by making a rope of the Ice Dub and the tying thread. If you can think of a great name for this fly, help Alvin out! My submission is the Mick Hucknall.

          No-Name Redfish Fly
Hook: Heavy-wire saltwater hook (here a Tiemco 811s), size 1/0.
          Head: Silver cone, 1/4-inch.
          Thread: Chartreuse, 3/0.
          Underwing: White bucktail.
          Wing: Olive bucktail.
          Body: Chartreuse Ice Dub.
Note: Tie this pattern in any colors and combinations you want.
