Theo “Gold Bead” Bakelaar is a Dutch tier often credited with popularizing beads in fly tying. In the late 1980s, Theo introduced his Gold Bead series in the U.S., and prominent figures such as Tom Rosenbauer immediately saw the promise of these patterns. Other anglers, however, considered beadheads to be “cheating”; they were the Mop Fly of their day.
In this great video, Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions shows you how to tie the Danger Baby, which is surprisingly simple. Of course, Tim has some cool tricks that will make the process even easier. I especially love how he uses the tag end of the green thread to keep the thread from sliding down the hook bend. He also demonstrates how he creates a peacock-herl “rope” for the body.
Danger Baby
Hook: Scud/emerger hook (here, a Lightning Strike SE3), size 16.
Bead: Gold, 3/32-inch.
Thread #1/tag: Fluorescent green, 8/0 or 140-denier.
Thread #2: Black, 6/0 or 70-denier.
Wing: Golden brown Antron yarn.
Body: Peacock herl.
Tools: Plunger-style hackle pliers, whip-finish tool.
