The latest how-to video from Tightline Productions, Tim Flagler shows you how to tie an effective midge-larva imitation that looks great in the vise and even better in the water. As usual, Tim has come up with an ingeniously simple method for getting the fly to look just right. By cording up the dubbed thread, he creates a distinctly segmented body that allows the thread color to bleed through. If you plan on fishing midge patterns this winter, twist up a few of these and give them a try.
Corded Midge Larva
Hook: 3X-long natural-bend hook (here, a Dai-Riki #270), size 24.
Thread: Red, 8/0 or 70-denier.
Body: Bright yellow Antron Sparkle Dubbing.
Head: Tying thread.
Head coloring: Brown Sharpie.
Adhesive: Head cement.
Tools: Ringed plunger-style hackle pliers, dubbing whirl, whip-finisher, curved-blade scissors.
