A few years ago, we launched a new series of videos called “One-Minute Fly-Tying Tips and Techniques” from Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions. Each video teaches a single tying skill, from the most basic to the advanced. Ultimately, the series will serve as a sort of encyclopedia of tying skills that will be a valuable resource for anyone who sits down at a vise to create a fly.
Cut-shank streamers offer lots of great wiggling action in the water, and they place the hook far to the rear of the pattern, which improves hook-up success. In this great video, Tim shows you how to create a base for such a pattern by cutting the bend off a 6X-long streamer hook and then attaching a smaller hook via a length of braided line. As usual, Tim’s process is efficient and effective, ensuring that the two parts of the system don’t come apart while you’re fighting a big fish. Just make sure you wear eye protection when cutting the big streamer hook!
