Here’s the latest installment of our series of videos called “One-Minute Fly-Tying Tips and Techniques” from Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions. Each video teaches a single tying skill, from the most basic to the advanced. Ultimately, the series will serve as a sort of encyclopedia of tying skills that will be a valuable resource for anyone who sits down at a vise to create a fly.

Some tiers struggle with maintaining proper thread length while tying. We’ve all seen someone (perhaps ourselves) making huge circles around the hook shank or struggling with the bobbin head getting in the way. In this great video, Tim demonstrates how to keep the bobbin the proper distance from the shank, so you can keep a steady one inch of thread between the two. This helps with proper wrap placement, material-handling, and won’t over-work your rotator cuff.
