Although most folks dream of wet-wading in summertime for big trout feeding on salmonflies or PMDs, Brian McGeehan of Montana Angler makes a strong case for April as a productive time to be in southwest Montana–with a variety of insect hatches offering great action throughout the month. Although the conditions are quite variable, early-season anglers have the opportunity to encounter midges, March browns, Baetis mayflies (a.k.a. blue-winged olives), and the epic Mother’s Day caddis hatch.
