Welcome to the latest installment of our series of videos called “One-Minute Fly-Tying Tips and Techniques” from Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions. Each video will teach a single tying skill, from the most basic to the advanced. Ultimately, the series will serve as a sort of encyclopedia of tying skills that will be a valuable resource for anyone who sits down at a vise to create a fly.

In this great video, Tim shows you how to tie a sparse, elegant collar from a single Hungarian-partridge feather. The key is to prepare the feather properly before tying it in, which insures that the collar isn’t too full and that the fibers stand away from the hook shank. These skills will come in handy for a variety of nymphs, wet flies, and emergers.

The collar should be sparse, with the fibers standing out from the rest of the pattern.
