Here’s the latest installment in the video series called “One-Minute Fly-Tying Tips and Techniques” from Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions. Each video teaches a single tying skill, from the most basic to the advanced. Ultimately, the series will serve as a sort of encyclopedia of tying skills that will be a valuable resource for anyone who sits down at a vise to create a fly.
This week, Tim shows you how to find just the right feathers to create a soft-hackle collar on a fly. He notes that most tiers look for the “prime” feathers in the middle of a Hungarian partridge skin, but the real gems are high on the bird’s neck. They’re usually just the right size and are easy to tie in. With hen necks, focus on the very tip ends of the feathers, which produce a sparse, attractive collar.
