In his 1994 book The Professionals’ Favorite Flies, Lefty Kreh described the Clouser Deep Minnow as “the most important and effective underwater fly developed in the past 20 years” and claimed that he had used the pattern to catch 63 species of fish in fresh and salt water. In the decades since Pennsylvania icon Bob Clouser created his minnow pattern, countless variations have appeared (see the bottom of this post for a few), but in this great video, the man himself shows you how he ties it. Straight from the horse’s mouth, you might say.
If you’ve ever fished a poorly tied Clouser, you know that the materials can twist and move on the hook shank. As you’ll see, Clouser focuses on tying the pattern so that everything stays where it is supposed to be and the pattern’s profile is tall and thin, like a real baitfish.
Clouser Deep Minnow
Hook: Mustad 34007 saltwater hook, sizes 1/0 through 8.
Thread: White Danville Flat-Waxed, 6/0 or 3/0.
Eyes: Dumbell eyes (size to match hook).
Belly: Chartreuse bucktail.
Flash: Gold Krystal Flash.
Back: Yellow bucktail.
Head: Tying thread.
Head coating: UV-cure epoxy.
