Native-fish “slams” have popped up around the country over the past couple decades, feeding a desire in the angling community to catch species in their original habitat. Wyoming and Utah have cutthroat slams, Nevada has a native-fish slam, and the Western Native Trout Initiative hosts the mother of all slams, the Western Native Trout Challenge. But have you heard of the Alabama redeye bass slam?
Check out this great video, in which author Matt Lewis and artist Mary Beth Meeks attempt to catch a Coosa, Cahaba, Warrior, and Tallapoosa bass in a single day. It’s a great introduction to these gorgeous bass, as well as the headwater streams where they are found. (There are three other species outside Alabama, as well, for those who want o go for the full schmeer.)
