BAY CITY, MI – A special event will be held this weekend to give veterans and their families a chance to enjoy spending some time outdoors in Bay County.

The sixth annual Veterans And First Responders Recreation Day event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20 at Bay City State Park. The event is hosted by Congressman Dan Kildee in partnership with State Rep. Timothy Beson and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

At the event, veterans and first responders can join their families in participating in free outdoor activities such as biking, kayaking, fly fishing and spin casting. Area businesses will be onsite to provide recreational equipment as well as lunch.

Resources for veterans and first responders will be available, including veteran service officers and caseworkers.

The event is an opportunity to thank veterans and first responders for their service while also benefiting their mental health. According to information provided by Kildee’s office, studies have shown that recreational therapy like fishing and kayaking helps to alleviate symptoms of PTSD.

Participants are encouraged to RSVP online at http://dankildee.house.gov/VetRecDay or by calling 810-238-8627.
