During the weekend of August 12 to 14 the Central Gauteng Fly Fishing Union (CGFFU) hosted its third provincial trials at the lodge.

“Verlorenkloof released 840 young rainbow trout to make sure that there were enough trout available for the competition,” said Chris Venter of Verlorenkloof Development.

Venter said a good healthy population of trout is necessary. Not only is the stocking of the river necessary before the trials, but it ensures a healthy fish population for the Crocodile River. CGFFU donated funds for the stocking and the donation was matched by Verlorenkloof.

According to Brett van Rensburg, organiser of Central Gauteng Fly Fishing, the anglers set out to utilise all their angling skills to achieve results.

Some of the top anglers in South Africa took part. The competition ended in a tie between current national champion Dan Factor and current South African number one ranked angler, Van Rensburg.
Due to the strength of Dan Factor’s first session (catching 44 fish in three hours), he was able to edge ahead of Van Rensburg for the win. Gerrit Redpath, Protea angler, rounded off the podium positions with yet another solid performance.
Van Rensburg said that out of the 21 anglers, a total of 387 fish were caught in the crystal clear stream using some of the newest river techniques on the fly fishing scene.
Special mention must go out to the juniors in the province. The youngest angler in the province, Ewan Wadley-Oats, won the fourth position.
