Student loan debt is the fastest-growing debt in the U.S. and is currently the second-largest slice of household debt – trailing only mortgage debt, and as college costs continue to soar, the team at Credit Summit researched the cheapest — and the most expensive — places to go to college in order to rack up the least debt.

The study analyzed the costs of food, tuition, fees, accommodation, travel, and entertainment in each city in order to determine the ranks. And, our beloved University of Wyoming came in fifth, as the best affordable university in the U.S.

UW has an estimate of $3,774.62 for the total cost estimate monthly.

The top 4 universities before UW, with their total cost estimate monthly, are; the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse ($3,073.50), University of Wisconsin-Madison ($3,154.70), Harrisburg University of Science and Technology in Harrisburg, Pa. ($3,733.95), and Florida State University in Tallahassee ($3,739.82).

When it comes to the cities with the lowest average student loan debt, Las Cruces, N.M., tops the list, with an average student loan debt of $20,868. Tied for second are two California cities, Santa Barbara and Pasadena, at $21,125 each.

Laramie is also ranked 10th for cities with the lowest average student loan debt, with  $23,510. Surprisingly, multiple Californian cities such as Pasadena, Davis, San Jose, Los Angeles, Chico, Berkeley, and Stanford dominated the top ten list – meaning prospective students may want to consider studying in California to keep loan costs down.

The study also looked at which cities in the U.S. are the safest, and Laramie came in at 21, with a crime level of 30. Boulder, Colorado ranked at 9th safest, and Fort Collins, Colorado ranked at 19th.
