The Canandaigua Lake Chapter of Trout Unlimited focuses on the preservation, protection and enhancement of local cold-water fisheries. Its environmental projects in western New York include removing debris from streams, planting trees and bushes, constructing habitat improvement projects and stocking trout.
Trees and bushes along streams provide shade and cool the water. Increasing water temperatures are affecting the survivability and growth of trout, particularly the native brook trout since it survives best when temperatures at or below 65 degrees. Trout need clean, cold water to survive.
The chapter reaches out to the local community by teaching fly-tying and fly-fishing, and participating in Project Healing Waters for disabled veterans and Casting for Recovery, a program that provides retreats for women with breast cancer or in recovery.
Trout Unlimited recently awarded a $9,000 grant to the Canandaigua Chapter through its Embrace a Stream program to complete a large habitat improvement project at the Cohocton River.
The chapter is participating in the Embrace a Stream Challenge for a chance to earn more funds and support Trout Unlimited’s nationwide efforts. Half of every dollar received will go to the chapter. Other opportunities include prizes for most money raised, most unique donors and daily random prizes.
The Challenge will run Nov. 2-8. To donate, visit embraceastream.org/organizations/canandaigualake during the campaign period. Email conservation@canandaigualaketu.org for information.
