ALTMAR, NY – Finding success amongst the fishermen that visit the Altmar area, The Tailwater Lodge has become a much sought after destination for those who have visited the resort and made dining and lodging within the walls of the old school a tradition during salmon season.

A success story along the Salmon River Corridor, the lodge has much to offer the community of anglers and non- anglers as well. Weddings and other social gatherings are hosted in an elegant but comfortable setting, available year round for those in need of a place to gather and celebrate.

“We are a family operation, and we pride ourselves in treating our employees as family,” said Woodbine group Chief Operating Officer Tom Fernandez.

Adding a significant boost to the economy of the Altmar area and contributing to the area’s tax base, the resort endeavors to hire locally.

“Employing those who live nearby is good for the community, and also an advantage when the heavy snowfalls common to this region make getting to work a challenge,” Fernandez said.

The Tailwater Lodge is part of the Hilton Tapestry Collection of hotels, a group that prides itself in staying at the forefront of changes to the hospitality business brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

“Travel will change,” Fernandez said. “We expect a new mindset to develop because of this experience, with more interstate and less international travel.”

Fernandez said the safety and health of employees and guests are high priorities and plans are in the works for improvements and upgrades at the resort.

“We are always looking for new ways and new technologies to keep everyone healthy,” Fernandez said.
“We are planning two or three projects in the near future, including new outdoor dining options and an increased variety of lodging accommodations… These improvements will be in alignment with new standards of health and safety.”

The tailwater offers an indoor pool as well as an outdoor hot tub to soothe tired bodies after a day of fishing cold waters or snowshoeing. Pet friendly rooms are also available to suit the needs of visiting pet owners. For those planning an event for up to 300 guests, The Barn at Tailwater is offered. Utilizing available outdoor space will allow the number of guests to expand to 450.

“We have been camping in the area, and some of the chilly nights have made us look for other places to stay,” said Larry McNess, a fisherman visiting from Lowell, Massachusetts. “My buddies and I stopped by the Tailwater and were very impressed. We are going to give it a try on our next visit.”

Fly fishing on Salmon River is the main draw of this multi-function facility, but year round activities are available nearby, with the abundant snows of Tug Hill calling snowmobilers, cross country skiers and snowshoers out into the fresh air for a day’s adventure on the trails of a frozen forest.

These same well developed pathways lure hikers and mountain bikers out into the nearby wilderness. A nine hole disc golf on the resort’s grounds is available, and an angler’s pro shop is located within the walls of the old school on the main floor.
