Susan Starr Scala CLAREMONT — Susan Starr Scala, 78, of Claremont, died July 16, 2021. Susan was the quintessential California girl. She was born with blond hair, bright blue eyes and a perfect smile, in Los Angeles, to June and Noble White Starr. She grew up in Modjeska Canyon and later moved to Fullerton, where she attended high school with her older brother, Tom. They were both competitive swimmers and Sue enjoyed spending her summers with her Aunt May and Uncle Art in Huntington Beach helping to care for their eight daughters and one son. After high school, Noble moved the family to Stamford, Connecticut. Susan attended the UConn where she met William Scala on a double date. The two of them were instantly attracted to each other and were married May 13, 1963, in Washington, D.C., the location of Bill’s first job after college and where their son, Christopher, was born. Bill took a job in Massachusetts and Sue had daughter Julie in Foxboro almost two years later. The family moved to Claremont, New Hampshire, when Bill took a position with Sinclair Machine Products. Bill and Sue became contributing members of the community, participating in the Chamber of Commerce, Cardiac Capers, Welcome Wagon, Girl Scouts/Brownies, Peewee Hockey and Oakley Boxing Club. They had wonderful experiences of golf, ski, camping and fishing trips with loving friends and neighbors. Sue always had a passion for meeting people and making connections which she parlayed into her own career recruiting business, Susan Personnel Agency. The highest profile placement was a governess for actor Charles Bronson’s family who lived nearby in Vermont. Sue and Bill continued to actively golf, camp and travel into their retirement, with Sue developing a love for fly fishing. She often said the movie, “A River Runs Through It,” was an example of a pure life. A thoracic aneurysm in her later years limited some of the activities she loved, but she continued to be kind, inquisitive and friendly to all. She kept treats for all the pets on Bellevue Avenue in case there should be opportunity for conversation. She passed suddenly but peacefully at home. Susan is survived by her husband of 58 years, William; son Christopher, in Fallbrook, California; daughter Julie, formerly of Victor, Idaho (now in Claremont); and brother Tom and wife Pam Starr, in Friday Harbor, Washington. No service is scheduled at this time. Burial to be announced later. “Live with Joy” – Susan Starr Scala Arrangements are with Stringer Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 146 Broad St., Claremont, NH 03743.
