Stone women at Bethel Woods

BETHEL, NY — The Bethel Woods Center for the Arts has announced the unveiling of “Rock-in the Woods,” a five-piece bluestone figure and digital art installation.

A huge female figure pays homage to the women who performed at Woodstock. The 1968 festival lasted for three days and featured 32 acts. Only three out of the 32 were considered “female” acts: Joan Baez, Janis Joplin and Melanie. According to a survey done in 2018, women on the music festival stage account for only 19 percent of the average line-up—and that is considered progress more than a half-century later.

The exhibition is a collaboration of several local talents. Fine artist Claudine Luchsinger has captured the spirt of these women by painting their portraits at the time of their performance at Woodstock; digital master PC Denizen has manipulated the portraits and projects them onto Rock Farmer, Wayne Holbert’s Bluestone Figure.

The exhibition will be on view for the next two seasons.
