MURPHY, Stephen “Steve” Age 64, died August 9, 2022 surrounded by his loving family after a short and courageous battle with cancer. Steve leaves behind his beloved wife and soul mate of 38 years, Carolyn Burt. He was born in Winchester, MA to the late Stephen J. Murphy and Millie Murphy. Steve grew up in Stoneham, MA and Portland, ME and attended the University of Maine at Orono. After a successful early career at CIGNA in Connecticut, Steve moved to Massachusetts in 1995 to join Northshore International Insurance Services, Inc., an international claims management and consulting firm, where he managed the Accident and Health Services Division, eventually becoming Chief Operating Officer in 2012 and Chief Executive Officer in 2019. He successfully led the company, its 60 employees, and several hundred clients through an integration into The Davies Group, a UK based international insurance services organization. He was also actively engaged in the industry, serving as a speaker and panelist at dozens of national conferences. Steve was an active member of the Managed Care Reinsurance Association serving as a Director and President. Steve was an avid fly fisherman, both salt and freshwater, and nearly reached his goal of catching fish in all 50 states. While living in Connecticut, he volunteered for the American School for the Deaf teaching fly tying to students and taking them fishing. He enjoyed thousands of hours fishing for striped bass on the Merrimack River on his boats, Riverhorse and Riverhorse II. Steve loved to tell stories and make people laugh. His kind, generous and thoughtful personality was shown by his care, support, and compassion for family, friends, colleagues, and clients. In addition to his wife, he leaves behind his brother Michael Murphy and wife, Cathy Eaton; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Jerry and Donna Pawlikowski; brother-in-law Jack Burt; father-in-law Jerry Burt; nephews Colin Murphy and wife Nicole, Devon Murphy, Collin Burt and wife Kate; nieces Hillary Osgood and husband Brad, Melanie Burt and Brian Diggins; and five great-nephews and nieces. He will be greatly missed by his family, cherished friends, employees, and business associates. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, August 19, 2022 at 3:00 p.m. at the Steeple Room, Mission Oak Grill, 26 Green St., Newburyport, Massachusetts. For the safety of all who are attending please wear a mask. Parking is available in the nearby parking garage on the corner of Titcomb and Merrimac Streets or area municipal lots.
