The North Arkansas Fly Fishers (NAFF) Sowbug Round for May 2021 has been canceled, according to the organization’s website. However, the three-day event is set to return May 24-26, 2022 at the Baxter County Fairgrounds for its 23rd year.The first sowbug attracted 20 tyers and 150 attendees. By 2019, the event grew to more than 140 flytiers and over 1,000 attendees.
The sowbug is a fly tying show. Tyers come from all of the US, and generally other countries are also represented.
The show floor is set up to facilitate access to the flytiers. Attendees are encouraged to sit and talk to the tyer as he ties a fly.
One of the goals of the sowbug is to encourage more people, especially young people, to become involved in fly fishing.
Every day of the event there are free introductory fly tying classes. Free fly casting lessons are available every day.
The seminars are chosen to appeal to fly fishers of every experience level. On Saturday, a free drawing for kids for fly fishing gear is held.
The Sowbug Roundup is not a vendor show, but there is a selection of vendors selling fly fishing/fly tying products.
The Sowbug Roundup is the North Arkansas Fly Fishers’ sole annual fundraising event. The income from the raffles and silent auctions allow NAFF to finance its environmental and philanthropic activities. NAFF allocates $10,000 every year for scholarships to students majoring in the fishery or environmentally related fields.
