Sir Elton John left flabbergasted by his ten-year-old son’s unusual hobby

Sir Elton John and his husband David Furnish have lifted the lid on their son’s unusual hobby that keeps him away from ‘screen and video games’

Sir Elton John ’s son Zachary has become addicted to fishing.

Fellow-dad David Furnish says the 10-year-old is “obsessed” with the sport – despite diva Elton having never fished in his life, and him barely too.

But he is delighted not least as it keeps him off screens and video games.

He says: “Zachary our oldest has become completely obsessed with fishing.

“He’s done lake fishing, he’s done sea fishing but he hasn’t done fly fishing so we’re able to get a couple of days up north (Canada) to introduce him to fly fishing which he absolutely loved.

“I love that he’s embraced fly-fishing so much – there’s so many distractions for kids today with phones, iPads and video games, internet and television and everything.”

Furnish said he was delighted that he had chosen the sport himself with no influence from his parents.

“I’ve caught some fish off a dock when I was ten in Canada, that’s the extent of my fishing experience and Elton I don’t think has even fished at all,” he says.

David said he was thrilled that his son was able to bond with nature.

He says: “The fact he’s run into this and enjoys it so much, I’m just thrilled with because it’s outdoors, it’s the fresh air and it’s all really meditative to get the patience and the joy out of standing and catching fish in any environment.

“Let’s face it, in fishing there’s a lot of waiting around, and it’s his happy place. He just goes straight into it and he’s taken it all on himself.”

David said that Zachary “just gleaned it from different people who have come across his path”.

He added: “He’s learned a lot about it on YouTube, there’s angling magazines you can get in the newsagents here in Britain so he’s picked up a lot of those and he’s just dived into all aspects of it, really researching it and he knows it all so well now.

“It’s amazing to see.”

Zachary also has a younger brother, 8-year-old Elijah.

Sir Elton and David have been together since 1993 and welcomed Zachary via surrogate in December 2010, followed by younger brother Elijah, who was born in 2013 via the same surrogate.
