JEFFERSON — Sally J. Smith, 73, passed away at Maine General Hospital on Oct. 27, 2022, with her loving family by her side. Sally was born on December 18, 1948, in Rockland, the daughter of Oscar and Almacia Jane (Wellman) Upham. Sally grew up in Union and attended local schools, graduating from Thompson Memorial High School in Union. She also attended business school in Portland.
Sally was employed at Central Maine Power for 44 years. She retired in 2009/2010. Sally was a grange member in both Washington and Jefferson. Sally was well known for her incredible peanut butter fudge, which she cooked for everyone near and far before Christmas every year. She enjoyed cooking, quilting, braiding rugs, snowmobiling, four wheeling, fly fishing and pretty much anything to do with the outdoors. She also enjoyed spending her winters in Florida for the last nine years.
Family was everything to Sally. Forrest, Heather and her grandkids were her life.
Sally was predeceased by her parents, Oscar and Almacia Upham; sisters Athlene Blake, Beverly Gushee, Christine Wellman and Juanita Mulherin; brothers Oscar Jr., John, Reginald and Wayne; and her beloved dog Abbie.
Sally is survived by her husband of 26 years, Robert P. Smith of Jefferson; son Forrest Bryant and wife Kristy of Jefferson; daughter Heather Kirkland and husband Shepherd of Jefferson; grandchildren Luke Bryant, Sadie Jane Bryant, Gavin Kirkland and Leah Kirkland; and siblings Shirley Berry of Warren, Jeannette Grinnell of Boothbay, Rebecca Ripley of Rockland, and Mildred Brooks of Union. She is also survived by her stepchildren Rhonda Smith and companion Carlton of Waterville, Robin Charette and husband Jerry of Gardiner and Anna Albert and her husband Paul of Randolph, as well as step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren.
Visitations will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2022, from 6-8 p.m. at Hall’s of Waldoboro. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2022, at 11 a.m. at Hall’s of Waldoboro, 949 Main St., Waldoboro, Maine.
