Roger L. Grulke, 89, died, with his wife by his side, at their home in Banning, on March 8, 2022.
Roger was born on Oct. 18, 1932, in Kenosha, Wis., to his parents Herbert and Ruth (Murdoch) Grulke. At the age of 21, he enlisted in the U.S. .Army where he was stationed at Fort Belvoir, serving in the 79th Engineering Construction Group during the Korean War.
After separation from service, Roger attended University of Illinois, Urbana, earning a Bachelor of Science in architecture. Following graduation, he worked in his field for over 50 years. He was passionate about his work designing major hotels across the country, and municipal buildings, medical facilities, military structures, churches, and commercial complexes in Illinois and Texas.
The last 20 years of his practice, Roger located his firm, Roger L. Grulke Architects and Associates, in Redlands, designing Loma Linda Civic Center, medical building at Loma Linda Medical Center, Indian Health Services, and City of Hope. He also designed multiple churches, commercial complexes, and military structures throughout Redlands and Southern California. When he wasn’t working, Roger had a passion for fly fishing, hunting, and was an accomplished watercolor artist.
He is survived by his wife, Kimmi (Cochran); son Eric; daughters Erin Shimura and Shelly McDaniel; stepdaughter Michelle Grande; brother Robert; sister Sally Naden; and five grandchildren. Roger is preceded in death by his parents, and brother Herbert.
Private services will be held at Riverside National Cemetery.
