Richard A. Montgomery
1946 – 2022
Richard Alexander Montgomery, born June 23, 1946, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family. Rich is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Kathleen; daughter, Noreen (Chris); grandchildren: Duke, age 8 and Siena, age 6. He also leaves behind his loving sister, Lu; and brother-in-law, Joe Kovalick; nieces: Alex (Mills), Evan (Snyder); and sister, Jan (Planzo). Rich is incredibly loved and will be missed by his east coast Duffy family of many nieces, nephews, great and great-great-nieces and nephews.
Rich was born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania to Richard and Margaret Montgomery. While Rich’s dad was a career member of the U.S Air Force, Rich spent his childhood living in many different places. Riverside, California served as home base while the family resided in Illinois, Florida, Newfoundland and Marysville, CA, where Rich graduated from Wheatland high school. He then moved to Santa Cruz, California working at the Pasatiempo Inn where he met the love of his life, Kathleen Duffy. Rich wooed her with his charm and wit and before long, they moved to San Francisco together. It was there that Rich was drafted into the Army. After serving in Fort Lewis, Washington and Vietnam, Rich returned to finish his studies at Sonoma State with an economics degree. He and Kathleen married and Rich began his stockbroker career of 20 years, then Just Security owner until retirement.
Rich was so proud of his daughter Noreen, born in 1979. Rich devoted his life to Noreen and Kathleen, supporting them in all of their endeavors. Rich didn’t miss a single performance or sporting event of Noreen’s, coaching many teams in which she was involved. He continued to support Kathleen’s dental hygiene business, as well as her non-profit organization Teacher Resource Center of the North Bay until she retired from both.
Rich was a lover of food and wine. Since March of 2000, Rich dined at his beloved Cole’s Chop House every Tuesday evening. He loved the sense of community, the companionship and of course, the amazing food. He made lifelong friends over the years simply sitting at the bar. His friends became family. Brother-in-law, Tom Duffy, would treat Rich to the finest oyster houses there were while visiting Philadelphia.
Rich collected antique clocks, among other very old mementos that had to be American. Rich was an avid San Francisco Giants fan. Rich and Noreen were at the World Series game between the Giants and A’s when the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake hit while crossing the bridge into the stadium. Rich loved to fly fish. He and his father took many fishing trips together from Newfoundland to Tacoma, Washington to the streams at Cohn Creek.
Rich was blessed with his first grandson in December, 2013. Duke was the apple of Rich’s eye, accompanying Rich everywhere. Rich and Kathleen helped care for Duke for his first 2.5 years of life. Rich was blessed again in August, 2016 with the birth of his granddaughter, Siena. Duke and Siena brought so much love, joy and laughter to Rich.
To know him was to love him. A celebration of Rich’s life is scheduled for Saturday, August 20, 2022 at Covenant Presbyterian Church at 11:00 a.m. at 1226 Salvador Avenue. A luncheon will follow immediately.
