SPRINGVILLE – With many fishing areas around the Springville area and across Western New York, a new business recently opened in Springville offering fly fishing and other fishing needs. Queen City Guiding, located at 25 E. Main St. in Springville, is now open and is ready to offer the necessary supplies for local fly fishermen in the area.

Owner of Queen City Guiding Ryan Evans shows off the many products available at his new fly shop in Springville.

Queen City Guiding, owned by Ryan Evans, offers a variety of fishing supplies including flies, custom fly orders, tying materials, tools, vices, rods, line, lures and other needs. Evans also offers guided trips for fishermen of all ages and skills from beginners to advanced anglers. Wade and walk trips are available on Lake Erie and Lake Ontario tributaries as well as inland Western New York. Warmwater drift boat and raft trips are also available.

After moving to the Springville area with his family and selling his flies online for a few years, Evans saw the open storefront on Main Street and decided to expand his business and open a location to sell his fly fishing supplies.

“I have a lot of this stuff on my online store and I have been selling flies there for a few years, so this was the next step for me. Getting a place where I can have people come in and actually look at it rather than having them find my website,” Evans said. “From the time I moved into town, I drove by this place and there was a for rent sign in the window and I said let’s go for it.”

Since moving to Springville and opening Queen City Guiding, Evans said reception from the community has been great and people have been stopping in the store to see what he has to offer. With no other local fly shops in the area, Evans wanted to open something new the community could enjoy and use for their needs.

“I love it out here,” Evans said. “I want to try and build a community here. There is no locally owned fly shop … and that’s why I have this.”

With years of experience fly fishing, Evans said the sport is an enjoyable time for people of all ages and skill levels and offers a unique experience for people who have never tried fly fishing before. Along with the actual fishing, Evans also expressed how much fun fly tying can be and being able to catch a fish with something made by hand.

“The one thing that got me super into it is the fact that even if you are not catching fish, you are learning stuff,” Evans said. “When you make something and catch a fish on it, it is completely different. We have figured out how to catch a fish by eating a piece of yarn and that is pretty cool.”

Looking toward the future, Evans said Queen City Guiding is also looking into providing kayak rentals and shuttles in the coming spring for people to enjoy.

Queen City Guiding is currently open Tuesdays from 1-6 p.m., Wednesdays from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. For more information on Queen City Guiding and its services, visit www.queencityguiding.com.
