It’s about a month later than usual, but Pyramid Lake is scheduled to re-open to the public for fishing on Nov. 2.

The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe has increased daily fishing fees to $24 for adults, $12 for youth. A three-day adult license is $62.

The daily fee for fishing had been $12, before Pyramid Lake was closed last March, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sales are online and at the ranger station.

Also, 12 of the beaches will be limited to 10 daily camping permits with Pelican allowing 20 permits per day.

Fishing Report

LAKE DAVIS: Davis is in great shape and there are finally some fish worth talking about. The stocking program over the last couple of years has included some brown trout which have grown to around 16-18 inches already. The Rainbow population is still not what it used to be, but together with the brown trout, Davis is worth doing again. Water temps are a little warm due to the warm start to fall, but fishable at 62-64 degrees. Fish are into the fall feeding mode and are chasing streamers and leeches. Size 4-8 leech patterns in black or rust are the way to go. Fish them with an intermediate or type 2 sinking line suspended in 6-10 feet of water. The grabs are awesome fishing this way and the fish are pulling hard. Something to float in is a must to get out into the deeper spots where fish are holding. FRENCHMAN LAKE: Starting to make a comeback. Still a little light on fish from what we are used to, but worth a day on the water. Indicator nymphing is usually the best way to attack. Hanging Maholo Midges in size 12-14 in 8-20-feet of water will give you the best results. The north end of the lake is a great place to start, fishing around deeper weed beds. TRUCKEE RIVER: Fishing here is as good as it gets. Flows, water temperatures, bugs, clarity, weather are all perfect. The Nevada side is fishing better, which is pretty much on par for this time of year. Fish are looking for food and a good drift is enough to catch a nice fish, but having the right bugs does not hurt either. Baetis and Caddis seem to be the top choices and baby crayfish and October Caddis as well. Nymphing either dry dropper style or high sticking is a great way to go. Try a Baby Cray with a smaller dropper like a size 18 bead head Baetis pattern. Keep your eye out for a cloudy day and do not be surprised to see some fish looking up. The next two months on the Truckee should be fantastic until we start to see some really cold weather. The river was stocked at the end of September.

Flows are: Town of Truckee 75 CFS, Boca Bridge 425 CFS, Farad 457 CFS, Reno 317 CFS and Vista (East of Town) 362 CFS. Pyramidlakeflyfishing.com or call 775-742-1754

LITTLE TRUCKEE RIVER: Back up to 82 CFS. There are spawning Kokanee and Brown Trout on the beds. Watch your step so you don’t step on any eggs. The bite is good in the evening for blue winged olives, midges, and small winter stones. Small nymphs, midges, and worms under an indicator or tight lining are working well. Mountain Hardware, Truckee 530-587-4844.

PYRAMID LAKE: The lake will open to fishing on Nov 2. Fees have been increased to $24 for a daily fishing license. Pyramidlakeflyfishing.com or call 775-742-1754

LAKE ALMANOR: Water temps hovering in the low 60s, should see high 50 degree water temps next week. Water clarity varies throughout the lake, 6-10-feet between Prattville & the Peninsula north, 10-plus feet on the east shore.

Fish continue to feast on pond smelt, on calm days you can see smelt boiling on the surface and getting airborne when chased. You will also find floating smelt being picked off the surface by seagulls. Fish are scattered throughout the water column. Gulps at 1 mph and hardware at 2.5-3 mph will catch fish. So too will Jay Fair trolling flies.

Ham Branch remains the top option for bank fishermen and fly-fishermen are beginning to target fish in the coves around the Canyon Dam boat ramp. Lake level continues to drop and boaters need to be aware of navigational hazards including; Peninsula, Flag Island and Dakasu Island.

Both USFS boat ramps are open and the dock at Canyon Dam has been adjusted. You can expect delays of up to a half hour on 36 over Fredoyner and 70 up the Canyon has sections of one way traffic. Most RV Parks have closed for the winter and lake side dining facilities will be closing soon. The Almanor Fishing Report is compiled from info received from a group of local hardcore fishermen and Lake Almanor’s resident guides. Almanor Fishing Association, 530-284-0861.

WALKER RIVER: Flows are 50 CFS. These flows are fantastic for this time of year. The East Walker can also be affected by low flows after irrigation season but for now they look great. They have dropped a little, so keep an eye out to make sure they do not continue to drop before you go. At 50 CFS you have access to the entire river, and you can cross just about anywhere. The fish can also be anywhere this time of year, from the deep fast water of the runs to the slack side and pocket water as well. Approach the runs slowly and fish the edges before you hammer the middle of the run. A lot of fish are spooked out of the shallows that could have been caught. Smaller nymph patterns in size 16-20 are the way to go. Practice your dry dropper skills with a hopper pattern on the surface. Pyramidlakeflyfishing.com or call 775-742-1754

DONNER LAKE: Fishing decent for those who know where the Mackinaw are located. Besides the Mackinaw, there aren’t too many other species of fish biting at Donner Lake now. The macks are fishing deep, around 100 feet of water. Anglers are jigging or trolling with Kwikfish, crippled hearings, and large rapalas. Donner Lake is at 71 percent capacity. Mountain Hardware, Truckee 530-587-4844.

BOCA: Fishing well for trout and bass off the shore with Powerbait and worms, Kastmasters, spinners, and small spoons. Fly anglers can concentrate using float tubes should try using leech patterns, and midges in Boca. There are some reports of cutthroat being caught off the dam end. Anglers looking for Kokanee should look elsewhere besides Boca, the kokanee season is over here. Mountain Hardware, Truckee 530-587-4844.

STAMPEDE: Fishing well near the dam for rainbows, cutthroat, bass and next year’s kokanee as well. The trout are fishing around 20-30-feet of water and the kokanee are around 45 feet. Shore anglers should try using black and green rooster tails, cripplures, or crawdad patterns. Anybody trolling should try using Rapalas, humdingers, needle fish, or speedy shiners. Mountain Hardware, Truckee 530-587-4844.

CROWLEY LAKE: Since there is no aquatic insect activity until the frost melts off in the mornings, you can start later on Crowley Lake, as the fish are more active in the late morning hours and into the warmer parts of the day. It can be a game of patience and timing this time of year, as sometimes the fishing slows towards the afternoon, but ends up picking up again an hour later as new fish begin to move into shallow water from the deeper areas.

Fish can be found at various depths, and 6-16-feet of water has been productive. The river channels are starting to see more fish staging up at the mouths as they prepare to move into the rivers and creeks for the fall spawn. Larger streamer patterns can get you into fish right now, but midges have been a strong producer these last few weeks. Varying your depth is important this time of year to stay on the fish. HOT CREEK: Fishing well with egg patterns, small midges, October caddis and pheasant tails. Sierra Drifters, 760- 935-4250 or email sierradriftersgs@gmail.com.
