PINEDALE – Casting for Recovery Wyoming received a donation from Bomgaars in a small ceremony underneath fly-fishing rods and nets at the store on Monday, Jan. 3.
Store manager April Ginest presented a check for more than $1,000 to Casting for Recovery’s national co-founder Gwenn Bogart, along with Pat Poletti and Vicky Marshall, former participants in Casting for Recovery retreats and staff volunteers.
Bogart, a professional fly fisherman and sled-dog musher out of Boulder, helped establish the original Casting for Recovery nonprofit in Vermont in 1996.
Casting for Recovery provides two-and-a-half-day retreats across the country for women undergoing treatment for breast cancer or who are in recovery.
The Wyoming chapter hosts two retreats in late July at the Absaroka Ranch located along the Wind River headwaters beneath the Absaroka Range near Dubois.
Casting for Recovery’s goal is improving the quality of life for women with breast cancer by combining breast cancer education and peer support with the restorative sport of fly fishing amid spectacular scenery.
The donation from Bomgaars helps cover the cost of the retreats for 14 women in Wyoming to attend free of charge, Poletti explained.
Bomgaars raised the money during its annual “Ladies’ Night” sale organized by Ginest in November, Poletti said.
Bomgaars divides the proceeds from the event among different nonprofits. For three years, Casting for Recovery Wyoming is one of the beneficiaries, Poletti said.
On Feb. 12, Bomgaars will host a dogsled ride in a field near the store organized by Bogart to raise additional funds for Casting for Recovery Wyoming. Kids of all ages are welcome to take a ride with Bogart and dog team and support a good cause, Poletti said. A $10 donation is suggested.
Casting for Recovery Wyoming accepts applications for its retreats in late November and early December.
