Paul James Pope was born January 4, 1928, in Washington, Missouri to Reverend W.E. and Mary (Brethorst) Pope. He was a 1946 graduate from Sherburn High School. Paul was united in marriage to Marion Zins on June 2, 1953, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Nicollet. This union blessed the couple with two sons whom together they raised in Nicollet. Early in his life, Paul worked as a farm hand when he first moved to Nicollet and later hauled milk for the Nicollet Creamery. Paul also worked at the Schmidt’s Meat Market before beginning his career as a custodian for the Nicollet Public School, retiring in 1985. Besides his work, there were a variety of hobbies Paul enjoyed in life. In his younger years, Paul played town baseball in Sherburn and Nicollet, and his talents gave him an opportunity to try out for the Chicago White Sox. As an avid outdoorsman, Paul spent his time trap shooting, fly fishing, and duck hunting. He was a Charter Member of the Nicollet Conservation Club. As a gifted woodworker, Paul carved countless bird decoys over the years and was even featured in the Minnesota Duck Decoy book which was recently published. Paul was a devout member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Nicollet. These memories, and countless others will forever stay in the hearts of all who knew him best. Blessed be his memory.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Nicollet Conservation Club.
