On Tuesday, April 18, Orvis will team-up with the Everglades Foundation, Captains for Clean Water, and Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation to urge policymakers in Washington DC to fund Everglades Restoration. Laura Schaffer, Orvis Vice President of Sustainability and Conservation, will be part of a group that seeks to secure the funding required to continue the work outlined in the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP), which relies on a combination of federal and state dollars. It’s an important time to make this case because legislators are currently drafting new bills–which will be introduced in both the House and Senate in the coming weeks–providing the baseline for funding bills that will be passed later this year.
As part of the effort, Orvis is taking out a full-page ad in the Wall Street Journal this Monday, so the issues are top-of-mind for the policymakers the group meets with on Tuesday.
Orvis has been committed to Everglades restoration–the largest ecosystem restoration project in the world–for decades, with the understanding that the benefits of a healthy Everglades go far beyond the boundaries of the National Park. A restored South Florida ecosystem will:
- Protect Florida’s $33 billion outdoor economy
- Ensure America’s Everglades for future generations
- Provide drinking water for 9 million people
- Protect 3 million acres of nature-based carbon sequestration
- Protect against sea-level rise in the coming decades
