Tomorrow, December 11, the Everglades Foundation is virtually hosting the 4th annual John Marshall Everglades Symposium–featuring our own Tom Rosenbauer as one of the moderators. 2020 is time to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the authorization of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP). This significant law would not have been achieved without the broad bipartisan support and the vocal interest of countless organizations and individuals who share a passion for the global treasure that is America’s Everglades.
CERP was authorized in 2000 with the objective to “restore, preserve, and protect the South Florida ecosystem while providing for other water-related needs of the region, including water supply and flood protection.” The plan laid out a 35-year timeline for 68 components with region-wide benefits to be completed. Now, 20 years into the plan – with some progress made, though each project remains incomplete – Everglades restoration must be accelerated. This year’s John Marshall Everglades Symposium will explore the past, present, and future of CERP; the key players driving Everglades restoration, and what must be done to bring restoration to full fruition.
