TOPSHAM – Buell Allen Miller passed away at the age of 88 on Aug. 20, 2022, at the Highlands in Topsham after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
Buell was born on Dec. 8, 1933, in Philadelphia, Pa., the only child of Buell Garfield and Selina Allen Miller. He attended William Penn Charter School and studied business at Lehigh University. When the family’s moving and storage business was sold, Buell chose a career in medicine, graduating medical school at the University of Pennsylvania in 1961. He completed an OB/GYN residency at the University of Michigan and moved to Portland in 1967, founding the practice now known as Coastal Women’s Healthcare.
Buell loved Maine and embraced the hunting, fishing, and canoeing traditions. Always on the move, early in his career he earned his pilot’s license and was a member of the Flying Physicians Association, flying his plane to Northern Maine to provide medical care to underserved areas. Buell served as the district chairman of the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists and specialized in infertility, delivering thousands of babies before retiring in 2002.
In “retirement,” Buell worked for the Maine Medical Association, founding the MMA Senior Section which today remains a vibrant group of retired physicians. With Konbit Sante Health Partnership, he trained Haitian physicians to improve testing and treatment for gynecological cancer in their country. Buell also taught clinical skills to students at the University of New England Medical School and served on the board of the Southern Maine Agency on Aging, each for three years.
Buell loved time spent with his devoted wife Ann, his family, his home in the Bahamas and cabin in Northern Maine. He enjoyed fine food, traveling the world, and fly fishing- especially at Cobb’s Pierce Pond Camps.
Buell is survived by his loving wife, Ann; son, Mark Miller and his wife Susannah; daughter, Molly Sparling and her husband, Joshua, three grandchildren, Jaina, Jonah, and Willow Sparling; and many dear friends.
A private service will be held for family and friends.
Arrangements are in the care of Maine Cremation Care. To express condolences or participate in Buell’s online tribute, please visit http://www.mainecremationcare.com.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
