Contests
• Registration is open for teams for the 10th annual BBQ Battle, June 18, hosted by Oakland County Parks and Recreation and the City of Oak Park. There are categories for both ribs and chicken wings. The entry is $50/team for ribs and $25/team for wings. Competitors may use wood, charcoal or gas. The deadline to register is June 11. The BBQ Battle takes place during the City of Oak Park’s Summer Blast, which includes amusement rides, music, grilling demos, food court and mini-pub at the Oak Park Community Center grounds, 14300 Oak Park Blvd., Oak Park. Farmers markets/Garden activities
• Clinton River Watershed Council to host an online native plant sale June 5-9. After purchasing online, the plants will be available for pick up at the Clinton River Watershed Council, 1115 W. Avon Road in Rochester Hills, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 11. Plants include Flowering Dogwoods, Purple Coneflower, several Milkweed varieties, June Grass and Fox Sedge. • Beaumont Children’s Walk for Miracles is June 11, at the Detroit Zoo. Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. All proceeds benefit Children’s Miracle Network programming at Beaumont Children’s. Participants are encouraged to dress as their favorite superhero. In addition to the Zoo exhibits, the event features the Beaumont Children’s mascot bear and popular fairytale and comic book heroes, snacks and refreshments and each child will receive a superhero cape. • Wally Niezguski’s Celebration of Life and scholarship fundraising event is 11 a.m.-2 p.m. June 12 at Clarkston Family Farm’s Garden, next to Independence Elementary School. • Farmington Hills/Farmington Emergency Preparedness Commission will offer an American Heart Association Heartsaver Class, with instruction in CPR, AED (Automated External Defibrillator), and “Stop the Bleed” Tourniquet Training from 5:30 to 10 p.m. June 16. The class is open to the public and will be held at Fire Station #4 located at 28711 Drake Road.
