The Tuckaseegee Fly Shop is opening its third location in Western North Carolina, this time in Waynesville.
Co-owners Dale Collins and Bobby Bennett opened their first shop offering guided fly fishing outings along with plenty of merchandise sure to appeal to anyone with a yen for fishing in Bryson City in 2014. Three years later, a store in Sylva was opened.
Collins said the Depot Street store in Waynesville should be open in early August, depending on when additional merchandise arrives.
“There’s a lot of energy in this community,” he said.
As the owners unpacked and set up displays for rods, reels, waders, boots, a wide assortment of flies and even fishing shirts, Collins said fly fishermen would be able to find about anything they needed to hit the water.
“Many of our current customers are coming from Haywood already,” he said, “plus there’s a lot of good water here to fish. Haywood County has a rich heritage, so it’s good to have a brick and mortar shop here.”
An integral part of the business is the guided fishing trips led by an experienced staff. In addition to providing trips and tips on fishing in local waters, guides take clients into the nearby Great Smoky Mountains National Park and “wherever fishing is the best.”
Shannon Messer, whose roots run deep in the Cataloochee Valley, along with Jarrett Lawther, will be familiar faces in the Waynesville location.
As the duo was departing for a guided trip recently, they noted fishing trips can be booked year-around.
Customers can choose a half-day option which includes four hours of fishing time, or a full day where there’s 6-8 hours on the water. Prices range from $225 to $500. Two-hour classes for $125 a person are also available.
