Montana got its first true luxury lodge today with the opening of Montage Big Sky. Set within Big Sky  resort’s 3,530-acre Spanish Peaks enclave, the$400 million resort  has an amazing array of experiences for every season, including ski-in/ski-out access to Big Sky Resort’s 5,850 skiable acres, three world-class Blue Ribbon fly-fishing rivers, a private 18-hole golf course designed by Tom Weiskopf, a 10,000-square-foot Spa Montage, mountain-inspired dining and more.

This is the West writ large as a luxury getaway. The new resort property is less than an hour’s drive from Bozeman and about the same distance from the gates of Yellowstone National Park. Big Sky may have a stellar reputation among skiers and riders, as well as some of the best Nordic skiing and snowshoeing trails in the West. Yet it’s also worth noting that it’s a prime area for warm weather recreation. It has world-renowned fly-fishing, and a seemingly endless number of hiking and mountain biking trails.

That said, Big Sky Resort has long been one of the great Western ski resorts, founded in the 1970’s by newsman Chet Huntley and currently the second-largest ski resort in the United States ( it is edged out from the top spot by Park City Mountain Resort in Utah). There is now an astonishing 5,800 acres of world-class terrain in a mountain landscape that is both challenging and spectacularly beautiful. The fabled lair of billionaires, The Yellowstone Club, sits next door. Yet Big Sky itself has never had a true luxury hotel property.

That’s all changed with the opening of the new Montage Big Sky, which has 139 guestrooms, suites, and residences. Interiors were conceived by Hart Howerton and BraytonHughes Design Studios, with the aim of making Montage Big Sky a contemporary take on the classic North American lodge. They utilized regional wood and stones, and referenced aspects of Montana’s history, including mining, timber, agriculture, and ranching history. The hotel also features a curated art collection featuring works from local and regional artists.

There are six dining venues, including the signature venue, Cortina, with an open hearth wood-fired oven serving rustic Northern Italian. By summer 2022, the Backcast Bar & Grille, offering barbecue and smokehouse fare, will open.

Spa Montage Big Sky is a 10,000 square foot space with 12 treatment rooms that include two couples’ treatment rooms, a full-service salon, an indoor lap pool, his-and-hers relaxations areas, heated plunge pools, and steam rooms. Spa goers can also access a state-of-the-art fitness center surrounded by mountain views, with a studio for classes. The summer will bring a Yoga Lawn.

The private residence concept is also part of Montage Big Sky. The 39 private residences have flexible layouts and range from two to six bedroom units of 2,300 to 8,100 square feet. The Residences offer as hand-stacked stone, western-inspired lighting, and custom cabinetry, as well as state-of-the art kitchens and grand fireplaces. Owners also have access to Montage’s optional rental program and will have an exclusive opportunity to become members of the Spanish Peaks Mountain Club.

All guests will have access to the resort’s 18-hole Tom Weiskopf-designed golf course, which is nearby. Set at 7,000 feet, the course has dramatic views of the Spanish Peaks and Gallatin Range. All Montage Residence owners receive additional perks, including access to special privileges and benefits within the Montage Hotels & Resorts portfolio, which includes Montage properties in Deer Valley, Kapalua Bay on Maui, Palmeto Bluff in South Carolina and their California

Montage Big Sky was developed by Lone Mountain Land Company, a subsidiary of Cross Harbor Capital Partners, a Boston-based commercial real estate investment and asset management firm. Lone Mountain Land Company is behind such Big Sky developments as Moonlight Basin, Spanish Peaks Mountain Club, and the new Wilson Hotel in Big Sky’s Town Center. Cross Harbor is the principal owner, with its investor partners, of the Yellowstone Club, Spanish Peaks and Moonlight Basin.

Big Sky country now has a property to match its grandeur. Visit Montage Big Sky for more information.
