The snook is prized by anglers for its aggressive strikes and go-for-broke fighting style. These predators are often found hiding in the gnarliest tangles of mangroves in tight tidal creeks, waiting for prey to swim by. Just because snook are voracious predators doesn’t mean they are easy to catch, though, as snook can develop “lockjaw”—depending on tide, weather or their own whims—that leaves anglers frustrated. Snook fishing involves a lot of hunting and a fair amount of luck, which is why landing a big snook is considered a true feat. In this great video by Todd Moen of Catch Magazine, angler Brian O’Keefe finds a big snook lurking among the mangrove roots, and the fish takes him for quite a ride.

The videos in our Moment of Thrill series are meant to get your heart racing in anticipation of the start of the spring fly-fishing season. It’s been a long winter, at the end of a long year. What we all need now is to feel the tug of a fish peeling line off the reel!
