Michael is survived by his wife and soulmate Margaret, sister Kathleen Tetreault and her husband Shawn, daughter Darlene Bartlett and her husband Rick, son David Rivers and his wife Kathi, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his brother-in-law Chuck Gebo and his wife Judi, Anthony Gebo and his wife Elleen, sister-in-law, Hope Nold and her husband TJ, Ida Duval and Harold, Marybeth Gebo, his favorite Aunt Gert who rarely missed a day without calling to check on him, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Also, his bro Frankie Fedele and his wife Essie, best friends Ernie, Kevin, Kevin, Skip and their spouses, childhood friends Sherry, Cathy and too many others to mention, but not forgotten. Tom and Dorie Sweeney who Mike spent endless hours at their house while growing up. There is also a special person out there who Mike loved deeply and someday they will know.
Michael is predeceased by his parents, sisters Patti Parrotte and Colleen McCorry and brother-in-law Jim Gebo.
Today the North Country lost one of its greatest musicians. Michael loved music from the time he received his first guitar as a young boy. Just to mention a few of his bands that you may remember are: Nite Society, Palmer Hill Band, Sunset Playboys, Too Big for the Corner, Replay and Damaged Goods. Mike also jammed with Ben Stiller during the making of the movie Escape from Dannemora. His most cherished band was the great duo of F & M. (Frankie and Mike). He was an avid fisherman who could tie a fly that looked better than the real bait; even filmed a PBS special Fly Fishing on the Saranac. He was a gun collector and could hit the target bullseye every time. He loved his Henry 22 rifle and looked forward to shooting at the range on Tuesday’s with Shawn; he said it made him forget he was sick if only for those moments in time. Mike retired from the Department of Corrections and with the help of a “great” friend Herb Carpenter, Mike was able to fulfill a dream of opening his own pet shop which he did, called Bridge Street Aquariums. He eventually moved to the Plattsburgh Plaza where he changed the name to Lake City Aquariums and operated for over 20 years. He truly was the “fish doctor;” he had such great knowledge of saltwater fish. Michael was like a sponge, he was inquisitive about everything and there was not a subject he didn’t know something about. We used to tell him he should go on Jeopardy. Underneath Mike’s rough exterior there was a heart of gold. None of us know what really lies in the hearts of others. Sometimes due to life circumstances we are afraid to tell you who we really are. In the last two years of Mike’s journey, he showed us that side of him and fought to live not so much for himself, but for his wife, sister and countless others who could not bear to give him up. He is now with family and friends who have gone before him. We will all miss, love and never forget you. Mike will live on in his music until we meet again!
We would like to thank all of Mike’s medical providers, Dr. Todd Whitmann, Dr. Anthony Vaccaro, Dr. Joanne Astile, Dr. Sadaf Mir and Dr. Steven Deso for your care and concern for Mike and his loved ones all through his journey. To all his friends and family who were always there for him whenever he needed you; this is what gave Mike a reason to continue on and more time. At each stage of his journey he would say he was going to the window at the Casino to see if he could get more chips (time). He endured so much pain and suffering for the sake of others who needed him just a little longer. A special thanks to Rachael Hite, NP who Mike was so grateful for her loving care and honesty right to the end.
