The Mountain Home Advertising and Promotion Committee agreed Thursday to support next year’s Sowbug Roundup and a local bass club’s bid to host a state championship fishing event.

A&P commissioners voted to provide $4,000 in funds to the Lake Norfork Bass Club, which is hoping to bring the Arkansas B.A.S.S. Nation State Championship to Norfork Lake next October.

Commissioners also agreed to provide $2,500 to the North Arkansas Fly Fishers (NAFF) to help support the Sowbug Roundup, which is scheduled to return in March 2022. The Sowbug is one of the marquee fly-tying events in the nation, attracting fly fishermen from across the U.S. and around the world to Mountain Home each spring.

A&P funds are generated from the collection of a 2% sales tax on Mountain Home hotel and motel receipts. The commission currently has about $27,000 in unallocated funds after agreeing to support the Lake Norfork Bass Club and the North Arkansas Fly Fishers’ requests.

The 2022 Sowbug Roundup will be held March 24-26. A&P commissioners agreed to provide $2,500 in funds to help NAFF rent the Baxter County Fairgrounds and the reception hall at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church for the event.

The B.A.S.S. Nation State Championship is estimated to attract 240 anglers on 120 boats to whatever lake hosts the tournament. Under B.A.S.S. Nation tournament rules, the 2022 state championship must be held on a lake in northern Arkansas.

The Lake Norfork Bass Club will submit it’s bid to host the tournament in the coming days. Speaking at Thursday’s A&P meeting, club members said there were three clubs in northwest Arkansas that might bid to host the event on Beaver Lake, and a club in Batesville was rumored to be placing a bid to host the event on Greers Ferry Lake.

The winning bid will be announced in December and is based on how many funds or in-kind donations bidders have collected to devote to the tournament’s operation.
