SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – “I don’t think anyone likes paying more for anything let alone gas prices ha ha ha,” said Jim Donohoe of Santa Barbara.
Triple A experts are projecting a busy travel weekend for Memorial Day in Southern California.
But here in Santa Barbara, some are choosing not to hit the roadway.
“I don’t have any Memorial Day plans,” said Donohoe.
“I’m not going anywhere. I’m staying here, because I have a Memorial Day Service at the cemetery on Monday,” said Carol Akin of Santa Barbara.
One of the main concerns for locals, as they consider their weekend plans, are the rising gas prices.
“It’s really expensive. I’m not planning to do anything this weekend. I’m going to save as much money as possible. Gas prices are almost at 6 dollars. I’ve never seen that before,” said Esmeralda Garcia of Santa Barbara.
Triple A projects an 11 percent increase in travel this year compared to last.
” I plan to go up to the lower eastern sierras campground. Their pct is active with hikers pushing through and I’m going to do some fly fishing,” said Aaron Luckett of Santa Barbara.
“My plans are to stay home and enjoy the weather if it’s nice and enjoy the three day weekend,” said Garcia.
“You have to make your chips count. I’ve been driving at 50 miles an hour instead of my normal 70. And yeah I think it’s ridiculous … we don’t have to go anywhere … we’re in Santa Barbara,” said Akin.
Auto Club experts anticipate 85 percent of holiday travelers will be driving in Southern California.
Prices are around $1.90 higher this year compared to last for Memorial Day weekend.
