Master Class Mondays: How to Fish a Streamer in a Shelving Riffle

A “shelving riffle”–where fast broken water dumps into a deeper hole–offers everything a trout loves: a steady supply of oxygenated water and food, cover from predators, and a place to site out of the main current.

In this great episode of “Master Class Monday,” Dave Jensen shows you how to fish a streamer through one of these riffles that flows over a shelf and into a pool. It helps to use a lightly weighted but sparse pattern, so it won’t make a loud Plop! but will sink quickly through the water column. By approaching the riffle from downstream, you can work from the bottom to the top, and you’ll usually find the biggest fish nosed in to the drop-off.
