PATTON — There are a variety of free, family-friendly public programs taking place throughout the month of March at Prince Gallitzin State Park.

Little Naturalist Story Time, Wednesday, March 2, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m., Park Office (lower level)
Join us every other week as we read a nature-themed story and then afterwards do a craft or hands-on activity related to the theme of the story. For ages 5 and under. Registration required by 3 p.m. the day before the program. Free program.
Go Birding! With the PA Society of Ornithology, Friday, March 5, 8 a.m., Prince Gallitzin Marina
Are you a beginner birder wanting to hone your craft, or an experienced birder hoping to spend a day with like-minded folks while trying to spot as many different birds as possible? If so, go birding with members of the Pennsylvania Society of Ornithology when they visit Prince Gallitzin State Park during their County-wide Spotlight of Cambria County!
The day starts at the Prince Gallitzin Marina to scan Glendale Lake for waterfowl before visiting other access points to document as many bird species as possible.
This program is open to the public, and birders of all skill levels of welcome. Some binoculars and spotting scopes will be available to borrow. No registration required. Free program.
Winter Morning Nature Hike, Tuesday, March 8, 10 a.m., McDermott Trail
Come along and start the day with a refreshing morning hike in the park to discover what flora and fauna can be found. If the weather is suitable, there will be snowshoes available to borrow! Be prepared for a moderate 2-mile hike. Free program.
Trek with your Pet Hike, Saturday, March 12, Soccer Fields (Hughstown Rd, Flinton, PA 16640)
Bring a furry friend along on an easy-moderate 1.5-mile hike through the park. Pets must be friendly with other people and pets and must remain on a leash at all times. Free program.
Winter Walk and Talk No. 3: Color in Winter, Sunday, March 13, 2 p.m., Pavilion No. 1 at Pickerel Pond Day-use Area
In this third and final in a series of three programs, bring the whole family out and join a park naturalist for a Sunday afternoon in the park for an easy-to-moderate hike and discussion of a variety of different winter topics, which may include winter trees and plants, animal and insect signs, winter weather, snowshoeing and more. Each program will focus on a specific topic. This program will focus on all the color that can still be found in nature throughout the winter! Be prepared to walk about 2-miles. Free program.
Beginner’s Fly Tying, Wednesday, March 16, 5:30 p.m., Park Office (lower level)
Interested in fly fishing for trout? Ever wondered how to tie trout flies but do not know where to start? Come to this program and learn the basics of fly tying. Learn the tools and techniques used to tie trout flies. All tools and material will be provided free of cost, and participants will be able to keep their completed fly patterns. This course is intended for first-time novice fly tiers ages 10 and up, and anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Equipment is limited. Pre-registration is required.
St. Patrick’s Day Hike, Thursday, March 17, 5:30 p.m., Muskrat Beach No. 3
Though leprechauns and pots of gold may be hard to come by in the forests of Prince Gallitzin State Park, the color green is something that can be easily found, even this time of year. Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this year with a hike through the park and search for all things green left in the woods. No registration required. Free program.

Take advantage of the lengthening days and refresh the mind for the rest of the week or get a jump start on the weekend by taking a moderate hike that will take less than two hours on the fourth the Wednesday of every month. Difficulties and lengths will vary from month to month. Registration is required, and meeting location and trail information will be sent to registered participants. Free program.
