Kenneth Edward Schoener, 83, of Juniata County, formerly of Orwigsburg and Harrisburg, passed away Monday, Feb. 21, 2022.

Born in Hazelton, April 27, 1938, he was the son of the late J. Edward Schoener and Dorothy L. (Dursh) Schoener. He is preceded in death by his parents, one sister Rita Schoener, one brother David “Jap” Schoener, and a niece Teri Schoener.

A 1956 graduate of Blue Mountain High School, Kenny was the first in his family to go to college, earning a bachelor’s degree in sanitary engineering from Penn State and a master’s degree from Harvard University.

He retired from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources after 20 years, where he specialized in improving the water quality of Lake Erie and the Chesapeake Bay.

Kenny was an avid outdoorsman, spending countless hours fly fishing. Additionally, he crossed the United States by bicycle six times. He loved his family and taught many of them to hunt, fish and appreciate nature.

He is survived by niece Sherry Richie of Reading, nephews Robert Cohan of Minersville, and Joel Petery of Hampton, Va.; grandnieces Ashley Brown, Lindsay Pellazar, and Chelsey Rarick; and grandnephews Joseph Moyer, Eric Ritchey, and Jacob Petery.

A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution in memory of Kenny to either the Dorothy L. Schoener Memorial Scholarship or the J. Edward Schoener Memorial Scholarship, Office of Annual Giving, 2583 Gateway Drive, Bristol Place One, Suite 200, State College, PA 16801. Kenny started both of the scholarships, in memory of his parents, at Penn State to help the first child in a family attend college.
