Just part of the trash pulled from Denver’s South Platte River.

As a founding partner of Protect Our Rivers, Orvis supports their mission to provide angling and rafting communities with opportunities to improve our local watersheds. So when I found out that Protect Our Rivers was hosting a clean-up event on the South Platte river in downtown Denver, I knew Orvis should be involved. By supporting initiatives like the South Platte clean-up, we aim to create moments for lasting connection with our urban fisheries and recreation areas.

Inspired by the success of that event, we decided it was time to engage one of our nearby Orvis retail stores in a clean-up event of our own. Located just upstream of the downtown area on a tributary frequented by bikers and mall-goers is the Cherry Creek store, which seemed like the perfect candidate. Although the area is maintained by the city, there was still plenty of trash to collect, and our nimble group of around 25 volunteers grabbed 437 pounds of it over just a few hours on a Saturday morning earlier this month.

Volunteers took pride in collecting the largest items and the highest volume of refuse.

You don’t have to live in Colorado

Through our partnership with Protect Our Rivers, Orvis has teamed up with Jack Johnson’s social network All At Once to launch the #bettertogethercleanup. This initiative is a way to give back to your local water by joining with friends–or going solo–to clean up the outdoor spaces you love. Now through October 7th you can sign up, share photos of your impact on social media, and enter to win prizes, including an Orvis Clearwater kit, Jack Johnson concert tickets, paddleboards, and more!

Sign up at protectourrivers.org/cleanup and use the hashtags #bettertogethercleanup and #AAOPlasticFree to participate on social media.
