Founded in 2007, Joey’s Fly Fishing Foundation is celebrating 15 years of service to Sheridan Region youth. The programs teach children of all ages how to build a fly rod, tie flies and the skills needed to be a successful fisherman.

The program partners youth with mentors who instruct students, developing confidence, patience and respect through the culture of fly fishing.

While appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse, founder Joey Puettman told listeners how he developed the initial program and ultimately the foundation. Puettman, working with a troubled youth, chose to take the young man fly fishing, hoping to give the young man an outlet, direction and a grounded perspective.

Those curricula and programs have become a successful youth mentoring foundation that is now entering its 15th year. According to Puettman, over 2,500 kids have participated in the programs offered by the 501(c)3; learning to hand make fly rods, tie flies, the biology and conservation needed to sustain a healthy ecosystem in Wyoming’s waters and of course, learning the lifetime skill and culture of fly fishing.

Joey’s Fly Fishing Foundation now offers merchandise and the Next Generation Fly Rod for purchase with all proceeds going back to support the programs.

An open house at Joey’s Fly Fishing Foundation is planned for 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. Thursday, May 19. To learn more about the foundation, click here.
