Gastonia, North Carolina – James L. Sloan “Jim”
Jim passed away peacefully on March 25 surrounded by family and friends. A Charlottean of many generations, he was born at Charlotte Memorial Hospital. Jim grew up in Charlotte where he attended Dilworth Elementary, the same school his father, Louis, and son attended. Jim graduated from South Mecklenburg High School and went on to attend the University of Georgia and Georgia State University, obtaining a degree in finance.
His first employment was with First Union Bank where he quickly discovered confinement in an office did not comply with his gregarious and outgoing nature. He found a better fit with outside sales where he worked in advertising with 3M corporation and later land acquisition for various retail stores. After interfacing with retailers Jim developed an interest in apparel sales and sold for several large brand name companies. Armed with creativity and entrepreneurship he went on to establish his own company, Apparel Resource Inc. Jim found renewed purpose running his own company and it brought him immense satisfaction to be his own boss.
He enjoyed traveling immensely- many family beach trips and excursions to the mountains, where he found a passion in fly fishing which put Jim on a path to create exclusive vacation rentals in Transylvania County, NC.
Jim is survived by his wife, Katherine Carmichael Sloan, sons, James Christian Sloan and (preceded him in death) Andrew Walker Sloan. Jim was an only child and always wished for siblings, which he gained when he married into a large family with “siblings in law” Peter Carmichael, Meecy Carmichael, Jacqui Weaver & husband Ray. Jim also was blessed with his niece Kerry Untz and great nephew Eli Hartsell, who helped fill his life with joy. Jim was respected by many and loved by far more.
A celebration of life for family and friends will be held at a later date at his beloved mountain home.
