Halford “Rex” Young passed away at his home in Klamath Falls with his family by his side on November 2, 2021. He was 96.

Known to most as Rex, he was born in Deerpark, Washington on Jan. 29, 1925, the youngest of seven children to Andy and Mabel Young. When Rex was a toddler, the family moved to Ellingson Mill Housing Camp in Keno, Ore. where he lived until approximately 16 or 17 years old when his family moved to Klamath Falls. Rex graduated from Klamath Union High School in 1943 and has been inducted into the Klamath Union Sports Hall of Fame. After graduation, Rex joined the US Army Air Corps. During World War II, he found his love of flying and enjoyed flying personal aircraft for many years after. Rex married Barbara R. Palmer on Sept. 21, 1952. The couple welcomed son, James in November of 1954 and, later, son, Richard “Dick” in September of 1956. Rex opened D&R Auto Parts in 1960 which he owned and operated until 2017. Rex was a proud Shriner and member of the Klamath Falls Masonic Lodge #77 for 50 years. Rex also served as president of the Oregon Auto Parts Association in the 1970’s. He was a major supporter of youth sports in Klamath Falls including coaching little league and Babe Ruth in the 1960’s and 70’s. Rex loved fishing the lakes and streams all over Klamath County. He enjoyed all types of fishing including the lakes, rivers, ocean and streams – mostly, though, he enjoyed fly fishing.

Survivors include his son, Jim, and son and daughter-in-law, Dick and Pamala Young. He was affectionately known to many as uncle, grandpa and great grandpa, with a special place in his heart for Kaceson. Rex was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara on June 10, 2015, his parents and six siblings.

At their request, Rex and Barbara’s ashes will be scattered at Odell Lake and off the coast of Brookings.

The family would like to thank High Desert Hospice for their care. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributions to the High Desert Hospice Foundation, 2210 Shallock Ave., Klamath Falls, OR 97601.
