The big catch over the past week has been grouper, while the bass bite continues to be strong along the St. Johns River.

Capt. Mike Vickers (hammockbaitandtackle.com) said the Flagler Pier is still seeing consistent catches of whiting, pompano, Spanish mackerel, blues, a few drum and sheepshead.

“The beaches in Flagler are producing whiting, pompano, blues, Spanish mackerel, flounder, and some scattered reds, drum, trout and snook mainly around the rocks on the northern beaches,” Vickers added. “Sharks are up and down the coast.”
Gag grouper offshore
Capt. Michael Mulholland said his Sea Spirit Fishing (seaspiritfishing.com) party boat did well over the weekend on the opening day for grouper.
“Local fisherman Joe Williams was high hook with three gag grouper and six mangrove snapper,” he said. “Kurt Tucker of Daytona Beach was our jackpot winner with his 40 lbs gag grouper.”
Redfish still in Halifax River
Capt. Fred Robert continues to see redfish in the Halifax River and Ponce Inlet area.
Snook in the Matanzas Inlet, grouper in the river
Vickers said the High Bridge area running through the Matanzas Inlet has reported good catches of snook, trout, reds, drum, mangrove snapper, flounder, jacks, blues, Spanish mackerel, lady fish, and sheepshead.
“The surprise out of the river reports are the increasing numbers of grouper being caught throughout the river,” he said. “The backwaters, canals, creeks, flats, main river, and deeper waters around the inlet have all been producing a mixed bag of good fishing, from sit-and-soak a bait to artificial baits, and fly fishing. This is the time to hit the water.”
Bass bite strong along St. Johns River
Capt. Bryn Adams at Highland Park Fish Camp in DeLand said the bass continue to bite along the St. Johns River.
“We’re still seeing a lot of schooling bass being caught and plenty of bait moving around, creating a feeding freeze,” she said. “The bait is threadfin shad, which you can catch using a cast net. Small wild shiners or top water artificial lures are also a great bait to use.
“Coming off the full moon, the bluegill bite has slowed down, but it will ramp back up soon. Live crickets work best to target these panfish.”
